Description
A comforting pasta dish featuring caramelized onions, creamy Gruyère cheese, and al dente pasta, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 ounces pasta (tagliatelle or fettuccine)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian)
- 1 cup heavy cream (or half and half for a lighter version)
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated (or Swiss cheese)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Cook the Pasta: Begin by boiling a large pot of salted water. Once boiling, add your pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, keeping the pasta warm as you prepare the sauce.
- Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Allow them to caramelize for about 20-25 minutes, until they turn golden brown and develop a sweet aroma.
- Add Garlic and Thyme: Once the onions are beautifully caramelized, sprinkle in the minced garlic and thyme. Stir and cook for an additional minute.
- Create the Sauce: Gradually pour in the beef broth, bringing it to a gentle simmer. Add the heavy cream, stirring continuously until it simmers again.
- Combine Everything: Toss your cooked pasta into the skillet, mixing in the grated Gruyère cheese. Stir well, allowing the cheese to melt.
- Serve and Garnish: Plate your creamy pasta hot, garnishing with freshly chopped parsley.
Notes
You can prepare the caramelized onions in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
